The castle was erected between 1308 and 1313 during the Reign of King Charles of Hungary. The primary purpose of the stronghold was to safeguard the northern border of the Hungarian Kingdom and to control a well-worn trade route between Kraków and Budapest, which ran through the Dunajec valley. The castle was rebuilt and extended on several occasions by the owners' families of this estate.
At the end of the First World War, this Hungarian castle became part of Poland. The castle was inhabited by the Hungarian Salamon family until 1943. After the state took over the castle estate, the Salamon family was deprived of their rights to the property. Since the 1950s Dunajec Castle had been under the wing of the Association of Art Historians. The Castle has become a popular tourist destination, it met with great interest among both Polish and foreign visitors. The Castle was used as a setting for many film and television productions.
